Karmaveer
Bhaurao Patil was one of the greatest social reformers and educationists in
modern India. He devoted his entire life to the upliftment of poor, backward,
and marginalized communities through education. In Maharashtra, he is
remembered as the “Messiah of the Masses” because he believed that education
was the most powerful tool for social transformation. His life was dedicated to
spreading knowledge among the rural poor, who had been deprived of educational
opportunities for centuries.
Born on
22 September 1887 in Kumbhoj village of Kolhapur district, Bhaurao Patil faced
many hardships during his childhood. However, these struggles strengthened his
determination to serve society. Inspired by the ideas of Mahatma Jyotirao
Phule, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, and Mahatma Gandhi, he dedicated his life to
educating the underprivileged sections of society. His greatest achievement was
the establishment of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha in 1919, which became one of the
largest educational organizations in Asia. (Wikipedia)
Karmaveer
Bhaurao Patil believed that education should not remain limited to the rich and
privileged classes. According to him, every child, irrespective of caste,
religion, gender, or economic condition, had the right to education. He
introduced the famous “Earn and Learn” scheme, through which poor students
could work and study simultaneously. His educational philosophy was deeply
rooted in equality, dignity of labor, and social justice. (Wikipedia)
Even
today, millions of students in Maharashtra benefit from the institutions
founded on his principles. His contribution to Indian society remains
unforgettable.
Early Life and Childhood
Karmaveer
Bhaurao Patil was born in a Jain farming family at Kumbhoj in present-day
Maharashtra. His father worked in the revenue department, and the family had
modest means. During his childhood, Bhaurao observed the poverty and social
discrimination faced by lower castes and rural communities. These experiences
deeply affected his mind and shaped his future mission.
He
received his early education in local schools and later moved to Kolhapur for
higher studies. At that time, Kolhapur was ruled by the progressive king
Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, who strongly supported education for backward
communities. Bhaurao Patil came under his influence and developed a deep
respect for social equality and justice. (Wikipedia)
Although
Bhaurao was intelligent, financial difficulties interrupted his formal
education. However, he never considered education merely as classroom learning.
He believed that real education should awaken social awareness and moral
responsibility. The teachings of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and the activities of
the Satyashodhak Samaj inspired him greatly. He realized that the backwardness
of society was mainly due to illiteracy and lack of opportunities.
This
realization became the foundation of his lifelong mission to educate the
masses.
Influence of Social
Reformers
The
thoughts and actions of several reformers influenced Bhaurao Patil’s
personality and mission. Among them, the most important were Jyotirao Phule,
Shahu Maharaj, and Mahatma Gandhi.
Influence of Jyotirao Phule
Mahatma
Jyotirao Phule fought against caste discrimination and promoted education for
women and lower castes. Bhaurao Patil admired Phule’s belief that education was
the key to social emancipation. Phule’s famous message that ignorance was the
root cause of slavery deeply influenced him. (ResearchGate)
Influence of Shahu Maharaj
Chhatrapati
Shahu Maharaj implemented progressive policies for social justice and
educational reservation. He encouraged students from backward communities to
study and supported social equality. Bhaurao Patil saw how education could
transform society when supported by enlightened leadership.
Influence of Mahatma Gandhi
Bhaurao
Patil was also inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. After meeting Gandhi in Mumbai in
1921, he adopted simple living, khadi clothing, and Gandhian principles. He
believed in self-reliance, dignity of labor, and rural development. These
ideals became central to his educational philosophy. (Wikipedia)
Foundation of Rayat
Shikshan Sanstha
The
greatest achievement of Bhaurao Patil was the establishment of Rayat Shikshan
Sanstha on 4 October 1919 at Kale village near Karad in Maharashtra. The word
“Rayat” means “the masses” or “common people.” The institution was created
specifically to provide education to poor and rural students. (Wikipedia)
Initially,
Bhaurao started a small boarding house for poor students belonging to different
castes and communities. At a time when untouchability and caste discrimination
were widespread, this was a revolutionary step. Students from various castes
lived together, ate together, and studied together. This promoted social
equality and brotherhood.
Bhaurao
Patil faced severe financial difficulties while running the institution.
Sometimes there was not enough money for food or books. However, he never gave
up. His wife, Laxmibai Patil, made immense sacrifices to support his mission.
She even donated her jewelry to continue the educational work. (Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil

Over
time, Rayat Shikshan Sanstha expanded rapidly. Schools, colleges, hostels, and
teacher training institutes were established across Maharashtra. By the time of
Bhaurao Patil’s death in 1959, the institution had become one of the largest
educational organizations in India. (Wikipedia)
Earn and Learn Scheme
One of
the most innovative contributions of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil was the “Earn and
Learn” scheme. This scheme aimed to help poor students continue their education
without depending entirely on financial support.
Under
this system, students worked in farms, kitchens, hostels, or other
institutional activities and earned money to support their studies. Bhaurao
Patil believed that labor was not inferior and that students should develop
self-respect through hard work. (ResearchGate)
The
scheme had several benefits:
- It enabled poor students to
access education.
- It developed self-confidence
and discipline.
- It promoted dignity of
labor.
- It reduced social
inequality.
- It encouraged self-reliance.
The “Earn
and Learn” philosophy became highly successful and inspired educational
institutions across India. Even today, it remains one of the most admired
educational experiments in Indian history.
Educational Philosophy
The
educational philosophy of Bhaurao Patil was deeply humanistic and democratic.
He believed that education should not merely produce degree holders but should
create socially responsible citizens.
His
philosophy can be understood through the following principles:
Education for All
Bhaurao
Patil believed that every individual had the right to education regardless of
caste, religion, or financial condition. He strongly opposed discrimination in
education.
Dignity of Labor
He
emphasized the importance of manual work and self-reliance. According to him,
no work was inferior. Students should combine intellectual growth with
practical labor.
Social Equality
He wanted
education to remove caste barriers and create an egalitarian society. In his
hostels and schools, students from different communities lived together
harmoniously.
Rural Development
Unlike
many educational reformers who focused mainly on cities, Bhaurao Patil
concentrated on rural education. He believed that India’s true progress
depended on the upliftment of villages.
Character Building
He considered
moral values, discipline, honesty, and service to society as essential
components of education.
These
principles made his educational movement unique and socially transformative.
Struggles and Challenges
The
journey of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil was full of hardships and opposition.
Establishing educational institutions for poor and lower-caste students during
the early twentieth century was extremely difficult.
Financial Problems
There was
constant shortage of funds. Bhaurao Patil often traveled from village to
village collecting donations. Sometimes he personally begged for grain and
money to feed students.
Social Opposition
Upper
caste orthodox groups opposed his efforts because they did not want lower caste
communities to become educated. The idea of students from different castes
living together was considered unacceptable by many conservatives.
Lack of Infrastructure
In the
early years, schools and hostels lacked proper buildings, furniture, and
facilities. Despite these difficulties, Bhaurao Patil continued his mission
with determination.
Personal Sacrifices
He lived
a simple life and dedicated all his resources to education. His family also
endured hardships for the sake of the movement.
These
struggles demonstrate his extraordinary commitment to social service.
